The Diocese

The Episcopal Diocese of West Virginia was formed from the Diocese of Virginia in late 1877 by an act of General Convention. The diocese encompasses all of the Episcopal churches in the state, numbering about 80 congregations. In 2001, the diocese elected The Right Reverend William Michie Klusmeyer as its seventh Bishop. Based in Charleston, the Bishop or a designated staff member spends several days each month in a satellite office in neighboring Charles Town. Our diocese is in Province III and Martinsburg is frequently host to the provincial meetings because of its central location within the Province. The diocese has many programs and committees designed to enhance our spiritual life and enrich our communities. Education For Ministry (EFM) and Equipping the Saints are programs of spiritual formation and study for lay leaders and those seeking ordination as deacons or local priests. Disciples .Net offers workshops and resources to parishes and parish leaders wishing to strengthen congregational ministry. The diocese places a high priority on Youth Ministry and offers many opportunities for youth involvement in the life of the diocese. Two diocesan conference and retreat centers welcome all religious denominations, organizations and businesses for spiritual retreats and summer camps. Sandscrest is located in the northern panhandle of the state in Wheeling, and Peterkin Camp and Conference Center is located an hours drive from Martinsburg in Romney. Generations of our young people began their spiritual journey at Peterkin summer camp and it continues today as the “heartbeat” of the diocese.
